Michael Cockerham who took up the position of Director of Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir in 1997 retired at the end of 2019 and while we hoped to appoint a new Director early in 2020 the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns made this impossible.
However, in the Autumn of 2020 Alexander Hamilton, the newly appointed Assistant Director of Music at the Cathedral, agreed to conduct the choir and it is hoped that come September 2021 he will formally assume the role of Music Director for the Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir too.
Prior to taking up his appointment in Wells, Alex held organ scholarships at three of the country’s most prestigious institutions, Westminster Abbey, Trinity College, Cambridge and St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
He read Music as an Organ Scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge, where he accompanied the choir in its busy schedule of services, concerts and tours, as well as a number of critically acclaimed recordings for Hyperion.
As a conductor, recent performances include Bach’s B Minor Mass and Christmas Oratorio with his own ensemble, The Kilgour Consort.
