Current Activities of The Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir
Since the start of 2020 change has been the order of the day!
Firstly, our Music Director, Michael Cockerham retired early and David Stevens assistant organist at the Cathedral agreed to take over.
All appeared normal but with the Corona-Virus pandemic we sang the last service in the Cathedral before the first lockdown – the Open-Door Service on the 16th March.
The choir did not meet again until 8th October and then only as a small group of 16 under Alexander Hamilton (https://www.wellscathedral.org.uk/worship-and-music/music/organists/alexander-hamilton/) the Assistant Director of Music at the Cathedral. We sang at 8 services up to the year end and then 3 in the first weekend of January 2021 before the second lockdown.
So, what now?
In March we had our AGM on Zoom and have used this medium to meet together socially.
We hope to resume rehearsals again in early May, albeit with a small choir, and should then be singing three services over the weekend of 29/30th May, and an Evensong in July.
In June we will be reviewing the role of the choir in the Cathedral and within the Diocese and choir members will be reauditioned.
In August we were booked to sing in Hereford Cathedral on a 1 week residency, but like so much else this has been cancelled, but we hope to go there in August 2022.
For the remainder of the year, we are booked to sing at the Diocesan Choral Festival, four weddings and 8 Cathedral Services, but inevitably there will be changes!
